Dumpster Sizes Explained: 10-Yard vs 20-Yard vs 30-Yard
Pick the wrong size and you pay twice — once for the small one, again for the second drop. This is the cheat sheet for matching the right roll-off to the job in Central Florida.
The short answer
For Central Florida projects:
- 10-yard dumpster — single-room remodel, garage purge, small roof job. About 3 pickup-truck loads.
- 20-yard dumpster — kitchen remodel, full garage cleanout, mid-size renovation. About 6 pickup-truck loads.
- 30-yard dumpster — whole-home demolition, commercial cleanout, new construction. About 9 pickup-truck loads.
Match the size to your project, not the other way around. Below: dimensions, what fits, and the mistakes most people make.
10-yard dumpster
Dimensions: typically 12 ft long × 8 ft wide × 3.5 ft tall.
Capacity: ~3 pickup-truck loads, or 30–40 standard 13-gallon trash bags' worth (with bulky items mixed in).
Weight limit: usually 1–2 tons for heavy materials (concrete, dirt, roofing shingles).
Best for:
- Single bathroom remodel
- Roof tear-off on a small to mid-size home
- Garage cleanout
- Small landscaping / sod removal
- Yard storm cleanup
- Concrete / dirt / heavy debris (because of weight limits — bigger sizes don't help with heavy materials)
Don't pick a 10 if: you have a multi-room remodel, full-house cleanout, or any large furniture (beds, big sofas) — you'll fill it before the project is half done and pay for a second.
20-yard dumpster
Dimensions: typically 22 ft long × 8 ft wide × 4.5 ft tall.
Capacity: ~6 pickup-truck loads.
Weight limit: usually 3 tons.
Best for:
- Kitchen + bath remodel
- Full garage and shed cleanout
- Mid-size home renovation (3–4 rooms)
- Large landscaping projects
- Whole-house decluttering
This is the most popular size — about 60% of our drops are 20-yarders. It hits the sweet spot for most homeowners and small contractors.
Don't pick a 20 if: you have a single-bathroom remodel (waste of capacity) or a whole-house demolition (won't fit).
30-yard dumpster
Dimensions: typically 22 ft long × 8 ft wide × 6 ft tall.
Capacity: ~9 pickup-truck loads.
Weight limit: usually 4 tons.
Best for:
- Whole-home demolition
- New construction projects
- Large commercial cleanouts
- Estate cleanouts (full property)
- Major roof jobs (multi-story or commercial roofs)
Don't pick a 30 if: your driveway can't fit it, or your debris is mostly heavy material (concrete, dirt). For heavy stuff you'll hit the weight limit long before filling — go with two 10-yarders instead.
Side-by-side comparison
Quick reference for common Central Florida projects:
- 10-yard: 12 × 8 × 3.5 ft · ~3 truck loads · best for single rooms, roofs, garages, heavy debris
- 20-yard: 22 × 8 × 4.5 ft · ~6 truck loads · best for full cleanouts, multi-room remodels, mid-size renovations
- 30-yard: 22 × 8 × 6 ft · ~9 truck loads · best for demolitions, new construction, estates
Common mistakes
Mistake 1: oversizing because "more is safer." A 30-yard half-full costs more than a 20-yard packed. We'd rather you pay for what you actually use.
Mistake 2: undersizing to save money. Calling for a second dumpster mid-project costs more than the next size up.
Mistake 3: forgetting weight limits. A 30-yard filled with concrete is a violation of every weight limit. Heavy materials (concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt, roofing shingles) belong in 10-yarders, not 30-yarders. We'll flag this before delivery so you don't get hit with overage fees.
Mistake 4: not checking driveway clearance. A 30-yard is 22 ft long. Many residential driveways can't accommodate one without blocking access. We'll do a quick check during the quote.
Pro tips for filling
- Heaviest stuff first, on the bottom. It compacts everything above and prevents shifting in transit.
- Break down boxes and large items. A flattened couch frame fits where an intact one wouldn't.
- Don't pile above the rim. Anything over the rim is a road hazard and may not be hauled. Fill level.
- Keep the rear door clear. Some debris gets pulled out the back if needed — keep the access path clean.
- Mix dense and bulky. Heavy items + bulky items + small items together compact better than one type alone.
How to know which size you actually need
Three quick gut-checks:
- Whole-house cleanout? → 20 or 30. Almost never a 10.
- Single-room project? → 10, occasionally a 20 if you're including furniture.
- Concrete, dirt, or shingles? → 10 (weight, not volume, will limit you).

The right dumpster size in Central Florida is the smallest one that fits your project comfortably. Most of the time that's a 20-yard. Heavy debris drops you to a 10. Whole-property work needs a 30. Free estimates available — call or text 484-401-0362.
